When a customer asks "can we just export this to Excel?" halfway through a Business Central demo, the answer that wins the deal is not "yes" and not "no". It is "yes, and you will never have to export again." Exsion Reporting connects Excel directly to Business Central: the controller builds a report once, refreshes it with one click, and keeps working in the spreadsheet they already trust. The partner earns 25% recurring margin every month, carries no licence stock and handles no support. In this post, Thomas Werkhoven, Director of Exsion365 and former controller at Van Wijnen and BAM, explains how to turn the Excel question into that conversation.

Why do controllers keep asking for Excel?

Controllers love Excel. Formulas they know by heart, layouts they have refined over years, shortcuts they no longer think about. Excel is home base, and it is not because they cannot learn new tools. It is because Excel gives them the flexibility their job requires. A last-minute board question about project margin is easier to answer in a spreadsheet you built than in a dashboard someone else designed.

The Excel question in a demo is therefore not resistance to change. It is a controller telling you where the work actually happens. Business Central itself confirms this: Microsoft ships Analyze in Excel and Edit in Excel as standard features, because the product team knows finance teams will end up in a spreadsheet anyway.

The catch is what happens after the export. The moment data leaves Business Central through a manual export, it is a snapshot. Somebody has to repeat the export next month, paste it into the same layout, fix the formulas that broke, and hope nobody posted a correction in between. That repetitive work is what the customer is really trying to escape, even if the question sounds like a feature request.

Where do BI tools fit, and where do they not?

Power BI, Tableau and Qlik are solid choices for strategic dashboards and enterprise analytics. For a controller's daily reporting, they do not always fit. Need an extra column? Wait for the data model to be changed. Ad-hoc question from the auditor? Book a consultant first. That friction adds up, and it adds up on the partner's side too, because every small change becomes a ticket. We wrote an honest comparison of the two approaches in Power BI or Excel: an honest comparison for controllers.

Put bluntly, the way many controllers work with Excel today costs them hours they should not be spending. What your customer is asking is not "can I export to Excel?" but "how do I get fast, flexible insight into my numbers, in a tool I already know?" That is what Exsion Reporting delivers, and it is a much shorter conversation than a BI project.

What does Exsion Reporting actually do?

Exsion Reporting is an Excel add-in that connects directly to Business Central. The customer installs it from AppSource in about five minutes, signs in with their Business Central account and chooses the tables they need, for example G/L Entry (table 17), Customer Ledger Entry (21) or Job Ledger Entry (169). The add-in inherits the user's Business Central permissions, so a controller sees exactly what they may see inside Business Central and nothing more. There is no second security model to set up and no data warehouse in between.

The controller builds a download definition once and refreshes it with one click from then on. Live data, straight into Excel. No manual exports, no version confusion, no stale numbers. Pivot tables, formulas and charts built on top of that data survive every refresh.

Arnold van der Werf, License Specialist at 4PS: "Exsion 365 helps our customers quickly extract and analyse data without complicated processes. Users simply keep working in the familiar Excel environment."

We asked Mary Ellen Rosinski, controller at AASK, what she would miss most if Exsion were no longer available. Her answer: "The ease of doing my financial reporting. It works every time." AASK went from two days of month-end report work to a few hours, saving 16 to 20 hours a month. For a controller used to error-prone processes, that reliability is worth its weight in gold.

Manual export, BI project or Excel add-in: what the customer is choosing between

It helps to put the three routes side by side, because the customer usually only sees two of them.

[[TABLE_START]]

Route | Time to first report | Who maintains it | Data freshness | Partner effort

Manual export to Excel | Minutes, then repeated every month | The controller, by hand | Snapshot at export time | None, but no margin either

BI platform (Power BI, Qlik) | Weeks to months, data model first | IT or a consultant | Scheduled refresh | Implementation project, ongoing tickets

Exsion Reporting add-in | Same day, 5 minute install | The controller, in Excel | Live on every refresh | Demo and introduction, 25% recurring margin

[[TABLE_END]]

The add-in is not a replacement for a strategic BI platform. Many Exsion customers run Power BI for fixed management dashboards and Exsion for everything that needs to move fast. The point is that the daily reporting layer, the one the Excel question is about, does not need a project.

From Excel question to Exsion in four steps

Want to put this into practice in your next demo? This approach works.

  1. Go with it. "Good point. Excel is a powerful tool, and nearly every controller asks this question."

  2. Name the risks. "If you keep exporting manually, you end up with repetitive work, version conflicts and reports that are always slightly behind."

  3. Introduce Exsion Reporting. "What you are really looking for is not less Excel, but a direct connection. That is exactly what Exsion Reporting does."

  4. Make it tangible. "Let us take one of your monthly reports and rebuild it. You will see the difference right away."

Step four is where deals close. Ask the controller for the report they dread most, usually a month-end P&L by dimension or an aged receivables list, and rebuild it live from G/L Entry or Customer Ledger Entry. The refresh takes seconds. The reaction is usually silence, then "can it also do...?", and from there you are no longer selling.

How does the partner earn from this?

As a partner, you know the dilemma. Your customer has a reporting problem, but a full BI implementation does not fit the budget. And "just exporting" does not solve the underlying issue, so the complaint comes back at every review meeting.

With Exsion Reporting, you offer a working solution in five minutes. No implementation project, no IT dependency. Your customer starts the same day, and we build the first report together with them at no charge. The licence starts 60 days after that first report is created, the customer pays Exsion directly, and you receive 25% recurring margin every month for as long as the customer stays. Support and updates are ours. The model is explained in full in 25% recurring margin, without investing a single euro.

Arnold van der Werf at 4PS confirms it: "Support goes to Exsion, not to us. We earn monthly without deploying consultants."

There is a second, quieter benefit. A customer whose controller refreshes live Business Central data every morning is a customer who stays on Business Central. Reporting frustration is one of the most common reasons finance teams push for an ERP change; removing it protects the implementation you already sold.

Book a demo

Next time your customer asks whether they can "just export to Excel", you will have an answer ready. Not "no", but "yes, and let me show you how to do it smarter."

Want to try this with a customer? Get in touch for a no-obligation demo. Five minutes is enough to see how Exsion Reporting works, what it delivers for your customer and how you earn from it as a partner. The partner programme itself is described on our partners page.

Frequently asked questions

[[FAQ_START]]

What should I answer when a customer asks to export Business Central data to Excel? | Agree that Excel is the right place for the work, then show that a direct connection removes the export step entirely: the report is built once and refreshed with one click on live Business Central data.

Does the customer need a BI tool or data warehouse for Exsion Reporting? | No. Exsion Reporting reads Business Central tables directly from Excel. Customers who already run Power BI keep it for fixed dashboards and use Exsion for daily and ad hoc reporting.

How long does it take a customer to get started? | The add-in installs from AppSource in about five minutes. The first report is built together with Exsion the same day, and the controller refreshes it from then on.

How does the partner margin work? | The customer pays Exsion directly and the partner receives 25% recurring margin every month. There is no licence stock to buy and no support obligation for the partner.

Does Exsion Reporting respect Business Central user permissions? | Yes. The add-in signs in with the user's Business Central account and inherits their permissions, so nobody sees data in Excel that they could not see in Business Central.
